HUMAN IMPACTS

Human activities affect nearly all parts of the ocean. Lost and discarded fishing nets continue to lethally snare fish, seabirds, and marine mammals as they drift. Ships spill oil and garbage; they also transport critters to alien habitats unprepared for their arrival, turning them into invasive species. Mangrove forests are cleared for homes and industry.

Ocean Warming

The oceans of the world are warming up, their average temperatures pushed higher each year by human-caused global warming.

The demising of ice sheet

The disintegration of Greenland’s ice sheet is currently the biggest contributor to global sea level rise

Ocean Trash

Beaches across the planet share many characteristics: sand, water, ocean breezes—and plastic.

GANGES EXPEDITION MAP

An international, female-led team of scientists will embark on a river expedition to better understand and document how plastic waste travels from source to sea and to fill critical knowledge gaps. Follow along below and learn more about the team here.

Finally beginning our trip south to Chagos Archipelago to explore mesophotic reefs, map the seafloor, tag manta, and understand the oceanography. Wish us luck. We'll be tweeting what we find. @BIOTscience @WestonFdn @Bertarelli_fdn @PlymUni @MantaTrust.
